within DOWNTOWN RICHMOND's iconic exposed brick walled buildings, there lies a warm oasis. humble haven yoga studio holds a soft + light vibration that radiates everywhere.
As I sit across from Suzanne (Humble Haven's visionary), in opposite hanging rattan chairs, I immediately feel her ease. There's something about her energy that is so... familiar.
These vibes radiate everywhere - in the exposed brick walls, wooden beams and within each class.
Just like any story, Suzanne's unfolds to me as February sunlight pours through the large studio windows - people in business wear quickly pass by as we unhash her journey with yoga, the serendipity of finding the space, all with a whole lot of agreeable head shakes.
Suzanne, a native Richmonder moved to DC after college where she fell in love with Bikram Yoga after looking for an active outlet. When she craved more, she discovered hot power yoga, then took a 40 day challenge which led her to assistant teacher training, then a 200 hour training. Immersed in her new discovery, Suzanne decided to teach yoga as her full time job. In addition, Suzanne, who feels like a natural cheerleader for the soul, started teaching yoga with special needs and prenatal clients.
Teaching and practicing yoga in DC paved a journey - from the connections to the experience within the community, she was thriving, but another transition was about to lean in. Richmond was calling - to be closer to her family and embrace a simpler life in her hometown. After embracing her inner voice and discussing it with her husband, they made a plan to head back to RVA, but she questioned where she could teach yoga and feel the same sense of community she experienced in DC. As manifestation and divine timing would have it, the vision of owning her own studio started to arise and like lightning, at the exact time, a downtown Richmond space fell into her lap and the starts of Humble Haven Yoga began.
This January, Suzanne opened Humble Haven's doors (very cool wooden doors, in fact) to the Richmond community. From Hot Power Yoga and private sessions to candlelight Vinyasa + Meditation (amazing music with this one), practice spans to all types of people and needs.
Humble Haven provides a handful of practices - all heated, some classes warmer than others, but each is sure to ground, balance, promote self love and connection. One of my favorites (led by Suzanne), Pure Energy is a prana style practice, where Tibetan principles wake up and align the endocrine system through inversions, stretching and breath. This practice also works wonders for the female hormonal system. The class starts by spinning in place and ends with a series of emotion-heightening stretching. Personally, this was something I've never experienced, but so grateful to have discovered it.
With an array of practice experience and student types, Suzanne is drawn to cultivate an environment of self-love, community and acceptance.
This intention radiates throughout the walls of Humble Haven and with each class' energy - freedom from competition or expectations - even while setting up my mat, other yogis engage in conversation and start ones with me that feel so honest.
What's next for Suzanne and Humble Haven's journey? Well, being only a little over a month old, she already has several studio events lined up including acro workshops and Shanti yoga for teens (damn, how I wish I had this when I was 16). She's also co-creating with her fellow yogi, Kimberly Landini to host a Mexico Hot Fusion Retreat May 15th (learn more about this amazing experience here).
Her aura radiates as she explains her desire to co-create with other local studios and instructors to cultivate a supportive and strong yogi community. What I really admire about Suzanne, especially as a business owner, is her sheer honesty about her client's practice and other studios. She acknowledges the constant human shift and what yoga practice might work at a certain time in life, or might not align at another time and this includes heated yoga,
"If someone doesn't prefer this type of yoga, I want to be able to point them to another studio where they can find what they're looking for."
She is the epitome of wellness - whole, non-competitive, soul-loving wellness.
